Looking for your next HR System?

Whilst some people might come to Softworld just to browse and stay abreast of developments in HR /Payroll software applications. If you are seriously looking for that next HR System, then don't miss my Masterclass session on Thursday 19th October at 2 pm. Pick up free advice and tips on what to look for, what systems will deliver a faster ROI, how to build your requirement specifications, how to tackle the evaluation process and how to complete the procurement process. The 45 minute interactive session might just save you a lot of time and effort!

Developing a leadership position through effective use of your information

We refer to organisations who have successfully harnessed their data for comparative and/or competitive advantage as Intelligent Enterprises. These organisations, typically leaders in their market segments, are those that can beat their competitors through better insight about themselves, their customers, their market and their competition.

So how do you go beyond continually investing millions of pounds in technology and solutions to create, manage and store business data?  How do organisations really harness this data so that people in their organisation can act on it to generate real business value?

Eddie Short, VP of Business Intelligence and Information at Capgemini, will be addressing these questions and providing answers when he opens the conference in the Total Business Solutions Masterclass theatre at 9am on 18th October.  These presentations are free to attend but very popular so make sure you arrive in plenty of time!

BASDA to launch new website at Softworld

At the show BASDA (the Business Application Software Developers Association) will be launching its new Information Website which is designed to help users and developers obtain information on the impact of new developments and legislation on their businesses and the computer systems they use.

On stand 139, BASDA will be offering visitors a chance to access the website and get answers to questions on many of the issues that concern them, such as the latest developments in Government e-Filing, the CIS(Construction Industry Scheme) the new VAT Audit File and many others.

Time management

I have been invited to give a "Masterclass" on the Acumen time management system, that we have just implemented.  I run an NHS "not-for-profit" internal audit and counter fraud consortium, employing over 100 staff.  Time management is key to me, not least as I have to break-even at the year-end on a £4.5 million turnover.

At the masterclass I will explain some of the background, both technical and cultural, that we have had to face up to, and how we are using an on-line real-time solution to try and minimise bureaucracy and then focus management on managing staff time.  I will also suggest why we chose Acumen from the options available.

Are we slow to embrace New Technology in the UK?

There are many HR Systems on the UK market today that are rich in functionality, and relatively inexpensive. The introduction of workflow and more recently, ASP solutions has effectively delivered MSS and ESS for relatively little extra cost and implementation effort. But are UK HR and Payroll Managers who provide HR transactional services making the most of the functionality?

Many have still not embraced MSS and ESS fully or at all, and few if any have fully automated the end to end transactional process cycle from Recruitment to HCM. There are still many HR processes that are not as slick or efficient as they should be.

The true value of technology?

In the July/August issue of Financial Director magazine we published research, carried out with CSC, which suggested that finance directors are now fully aware of the true business potential of technology.

IT, it seems, is no longer seen as a cost, but as a long term strategic investment - and measuring the return on that investment is not of critical concern. "Instead of having technology in a support role, it is one of the central driving engines for the organisation," said one finance director.

Recent research by the Economist Intelligence Unit points to very similar findings with 69% of C-Level respondents saying that within three years the role of IT will move from cutting costs to driving revenue growth.

So, is the role of technology in the eyes of directors changing? Are execs finally viewing IT as central to the business, rather than something that the guys in jeans and trainers look after on the fourth floor? Will IT directors get seats on the board? Is ROI a waste of time?

We plan to get to the bottom of these questions, and hopefully many more, during an Insider Business Club live roadshow at Softworld Accounting & Finance.

But let's get the ball rolling now...

Major VAT changes planned by HMRC

HMRC is in deep discussion with the software industry about the best way to fight its burgeoning 'Carousel Fraud'. The current suggestion is the treatment of certain items as 'Reverse Charge' when sold 'business-to-business' (b2b), but as normal VAT when sold retail.  The trading company would have to send a Reverse Charge Sales List (RCSL) to HMRC showing the monthly sale of these items under the reverse charge rules.

The concept of Reverse Charge has already been implemented in most computer systems but only for imports from EC countries.  This new initiative will be for local b2b sales of the specified goods (Mobile Phones, Computer Chips, Memory Cards etc).  We would have to upgrade our VAT systems as well as provide the ability to send the new Reverse Charge Sales List.

HMRC expects to have EU approval for these changes before the end of the year - unfortunately it may be a further 6 months before the software industry is able to deliver updates to its products.
